Well here we are... It is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the 2011 Season has drawn to a close for most of you. We look forward to seeing you back in the Spring. Should you continue to come up we hope to see you at the SPA events and around The Point.
This is the inaugural post for The Sturgeon Point History Project! I believe that this venue will allow me to share all the interesting tid-bits that I am learning about our community and to ask for your input.
2011 was an amazingly successful season in the collecting of images and in the sharing of our community's history. I received 22 photo albums, with six of those still left to scan. We participated in three events - Canada Day BBQ, Talk at the Church, and the Regatta - inside the community and three around the lake - Kawartha Heritage Talk in Fenelon, Victoria Co Historical Society's Day at the Armouries in Lindsay, and Family History Day at Maryboro Lodge in Fenelon.
I enjoyed meeting so many more people as I was invited into cottages I have never been into and they shared their family histories at The Point with me. Thank you all for your generosity.
Here is one of our newest finds - a 1915 image of the Church. This image came courtesy of The Neelands family.
As you can see, except for a few trees, the community has been amazingly successful at keeping the original church intact. Here it is again, courtesy of the Cave family in 1944:
In 1970, it was looking like this image from my family:
And then most recently with the gardens added:
I hope that these images will encourage you to look through your own albums and send me your finds. I look forward to chatting with you all.
Age has made it lovelier. Remarkable how little it has changed over the (near) century. This is a grand thing you're doing, Liane. Thank you.
